Detailed Itinerary

4-Day Aswan to Luxor Solar Eclipse Nile Cruise (30 July–2 August 2027)

Day 1: Friday, 30 July 2027 – Arrival in Aswan and Island Temples

Upon arrival at Aswan Airport, our representative will welcome you and arrange your private transfer to the Nile cruise. After embarkation, meet your licensed Egyptologist and begin exploring the distinctive landscapes and ancient heritage of southern Egypt.

Travel by motorboat across the Nile to Agilkia Island, where the Temple of Philae rises above the water. Dedicated primarily to the goddess Isis, the sanctuary was carefully relocated during the UNESCO-led rescue campaign to protect it from the rising waters created by the Aswan dams.

Continue to the ancient granite quarries and examine the Unfinished Obelisk. Still attached to the bedrock, this enormous monument reveals how Egyptian stoneworkers shaped and prepared obelisks before transporting them to major temple complexes.

Return to the cruise for lunch. Later, weather permitting, relax aboard a traditional felucca as it moves quietly between Aswan’s islands, granite outcrops and riverside gardens.

Dinner and overnight aboard the cruise in Aswan.

Meals: Lunch and dinner

Day 2: Saturday, 31 July 2027 – Optional Abu Simbel and Kom Ombo

Early risers may join an optional excursion to the Temples of Abu Simbel. Cut into the mountainside for Ramses II and Queen Nefertari, these monumental temples were relocated block by block to save them from the waters of Lake Nasser.

After breakfast, enjoy an unhurried sailing experience through the rural Nile Valley. Watch palm groves, farmland and traditional villages pass while lunch is served aboard the cruise.

Upon reaching Kom Ombo, walk to its unusual riverside temple. The complex is arranged as two parallel sanctuaries: one honouring Sobek, the crocodile god, and the other dedicated to the falcon deity Haroeris. Your Egyptologist will also explain its ancient medical reliefs, ritual spaces and connection with the sacred crocodiles once kept in the region.

Return to the ship and continue sailing towards Edfu.

Dinner and overnight aboard the cruise in Edfu.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Sunday, 1 August 2027 – Edfu Temple, Esna Lock and Luxor by Night

After breakfast, visit the Temple of Edfu, one of Egypt’s most complete surviving ancient sanctuaries. Dedicated to Horus, its monumental entrance, enclosed courtyards and detailed inscriptions preserve the story of the conflict between Horus and Seth.

Return to the cruise and sail north towards Luxor while enjoying lunch and panoramic views of the river.

The journey includes passage through Esna Lock, where the vessel is raised or lowered between different Nile water levels. This is an interesting opportunity to watch the river’s modern navigation system in operation while observing daily life around Esna.

Upon reaching Luxor, visit Luxor Temple in the softer evening light. Built and expanded by rulers including Amenhotep III and Ramses II, the temple formed part of ancient Thebes’ ceremonial landscape and was historically connected to Karnak by the Avenue of the Sphinxes.

If navigation causes a delayed arrival, the Luxor Temple visit will be rearranged within the available program.

Dinner and overnight aboard the cruise in Luxor.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Monday, 2 August 2027 – Total Solar Eclipse and Ancient Thebes

Begin this historic morning with breakfast aboard the cruise before disembarkation. An optional sunrise hot-air-balloon flight over Luxor’s West Bank may be available at an additional cost, subject to weather and aviation approval.

The schedule is deliberately kept clear around the eclipse period, allowing you to experience the event without a rushed sightseeing program. With approximately 6 minutes and 20 seconds of expected totality in the Luxor region, daylight will fade above the ancient landscape before the Sun’s corona appears around the Moon.

Attend the organized eclipse-viewing experience in the Karnak area, subject to final government authorization, access regulations and the confirmed observation location. Your guide will place the event within the historical setting of ancient Thebes and the solar traditions associated with Egyptian religious life.

After totality, explore the Karnak Temple Complex, including the monumental Great Hypostyle Hall, the obelisks of Hatshepsut and the Temple of Ramses III.

Continue to Luxor’s West Bank to visit the Valley of the Kings and enter three royal tombs decorated with scenes depicting the pharaohs’ journey into the afterlife. Proceed to the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir El-Bahari before stopping at the Colossi of Memnon.

After the tour, transfer to Luxor Airport or your selected Luxor hotel.

Meals: Breakfast

Note: Eclipse observation arrangements, Karnak-area access and the order of sightseeing remain subject to the final instructions issued by the Egyptian authorities.

Upon arrival at Luxor Airport or collection from your Luxor hotel, meet our representative and licensed Egyptologist. The day’s timing is structured around the total solar eclipse, avoiding unnecessary transfers during the critical observation period.

Experience the remarkable transformation as daylight fades over ancient Thebes and the solar corona becomes visible around the Moon. Your guide will provide historical context connecting Karnak, the cult of Amun-Ra and the solar traditions of ancient Egypt.

After totality, explore the Karnak Temple Complex, including the Great Hypostyle Hall, Hatshepsut’s obelisks and the surviving sanctuaries created by generations of Egyptian rulers.

Transfer to your Nile cruise, complete the embarkation procedures and enjoy lunch aboard.

In the evening, visit Luxor Temple as its columns and statues take on a different character in the softer sunset and evening light. Walk through the ceremonial complex once connected to Karnak by the Avenue of the Sphinxes.

The visit also includes the Tomb of Tutankhamun, where you can see the young king’s mummy and stone sarcophagus. Admission is subject to the monument’s operating regulations and any conservation closures.

Continue to the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir El-Bahari, an architectural masterpiece arranged across terraces beneath the limestone cliffs. Stop beside the Colossi of Memnon before returning to the cruise.

Return to the ship and continue sailing towards Kom Ombo, with lunch served aboard.

At Kom Ombo, take a short walk from the riverbank to the temple’s distinctive double sanctuary. Discover its parallel courts dedicated to Sobek and Haroeris, along with reliefs associated with medicine, ritual calendars and the religious life of the Nile Valley.

Rejoin the cruise and sail towards Aswan. Enjoy afternoon tea on the sun deck as the scenery gradually changes from cultivated riverbanks to the granite landscape of Nubia.

Continue to the ancient granite quarries to see the Unfinished Obelisk, whose abandoned form provides direct evidence of the tools and techniques used by ancient Egyptian stoneworkers.

Return to the cruise for lunch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are solar eclipses dangerous?

Solar eclipses are not inherently dangerous, but viewing them without proper eye protection can cause severe damage to your eyesight. Always use certified eclipse glasses or solar filters when observing the Sun, except during the brief moments of totality when it is safe to look directly at the eclipse.

Why are solar eclipses rare?

Solar eclipses are rare because they require precise alignment of the Earth, Moon, and Sun. The Moon's shadow covers only a small portion of the Earth's surface, making the path of totality limited to specific regions. Additionally, the timing of the Moon's orbit and the Earth's tilt adds to the rarity of these events.

When is the next solar eclipse in Egypt?

The next solar eclipse in Egypt will occur on August 2, 2027, and it will be a total solar eclipse visible across various regions of the country.

When was the last solar eclipse in Egypt?

The last solar eclipse visible in Egypt was a partial solar eclipse on October 25, 2022.

How long will the solar eclipse last in Egypt?

The total solar eclipse in Egypt on August 2, 2027, will last up to 6 minutes and 22 seconds, depending on the viewing location.

What did ancient Egypt think about the solar eclipse?

In ancient Egyptian mythology, a solar eclipse symbolized the struggle between the Sun god Ra and the chaotic serpent Apep. Rituals were conducted to protect Ra and ensure the return of light and order to the world.

When was the last full solar eclipse in Egypt?

The last full (total) solar eclipse visible in Egypt occurred on March 29, 2006, with many regions experiencing totality.
